Particularly for young people, the image of theatre and performance is often one of campiness and lacking masculinity. But why? Where does this come from?
Why is theatre seen to be so queer? Well, there are a couple of possible answers. Historically, gay people became very adept at presenting a face to society that was fiction. It is not difficult to make a jump to the theater when you have a lifetime of acting experience. Lesbians and gay men became fixtures in the theater. Theater people developed a culture of tolerance and acceptance. A sort of “band of freaks” mentality.
